The Western Algarve is a great Holiday Destination

Offering some 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, the Western Algarve is not just a favourite destination for retirees and investors in holiday homes, it also attracts a large number of young holidaymakers, who come here to swim and snorkel, scuba dive, sail and surf, not to mention enjoy a great nightlife. It takes just 2.5 hours to fly from the UK to Faro and with car hire from Faro Airport great cities like the Portuguese capital Lisbon or Seville across the border in Spain are easily accessible thanks to a modern and fast motorway network.

There's hardly ever a problem parking the hire car from Faro Airport either. Resorts offer plenty of free municipal car parking spaces and on the whole traffic is light and apart from the busy coastal motorway there is little congestion to speak of.

Wide, open Spaces and big Smiles

Thankfully, the Western Algarve's residents often speak English as their second language, so getting around is much easier than in other European countries. Friendly and tolerant of foreigners, Portugal's hard-working citizens have long become used to a flood of holidaymakers descending on their country during spring and summer.

The Western Algarve boasts wonderful beaches with white sands and shallow waters, ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. There are various nature reserves, in particular the beautiful Costa Vicentina Nature Park, a 150 km stretch of protected coastline that lies just west of Lagos and boasts an amazing variety of flora and fauna, not to mention dramatic cliffs and impressive rock formations one can climb.

Embracing an outdoor Life

Visiting the Algarve is all about living under the blue skies and enjoying an outdoor life, from al fresco meals by the pool or at the beachfront bar to playing golf at one of the Algarve's 35 golf courses. Try Boavista, Parque da Floresta, Espiche's brand new course or the re-developed 27-hole Palmares Golf course to start you off!

Famous for its fabulous beaches, the Western Algarve offers some of the best parasailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, sport fishing, water-skiing, scuba diving and sailing Europe has to offer. Charter a yacht if you are a confident and certified skipper or hire a yacht with a skipper and take off into the blue yonder for a day. For the less well-off there are sea kayaking and going fishing or enrolling on a sailing course. Families with children can join dolphin watch boat tours or join a "real" pirate ship for a day, complete with lunch and eye-patch. Parrots and hook-hands are optional!

For thrills try climbing cliffs at Sagres, where safe climbing pitches have been marked out to keep climbers safe. If you've got money to burn, try seeing the coastline from above by booking a microlite flying lesson.

Rent a car at Faro Airport and go to Portimão’s Autódromo, which is one of the world's best go-karting venues. The Kartódromo go-karting track is ideal for budding speed-freaks and tomorrow's racing drivers, while the Autódromo itself is on the World Superbike Championship circuit and if you're lucky, you might see some fabulous races and competitions while you're visiting the Western Algarve.
