Algarve Nature Activities
Apr 28, 2015
The Algarve region in Portugal offers families and those seeking an active type of holiday a huge number of wonderful excursions and nature-related activities. A variety of companies encourage tourists to ditch their typical car rental from Faro Airport travel arrangements and head out on foot, by boat or hired bike to explore the natural wonders of the Algarve.

Natura Algarve is a Faro-based company that prides itself on its eco-friendly range of excursions. The company offers a wide spectrum of tours, from day-long boat tours in the Ria Formosa natural park to 2. 5 hour bird-watching trips or dolphin-watch tours that take just a couple of hours. Situated in the Av 5 do Otubro, the company aims to entertain and educate visitors in a fun and responsible way.

The tours include a knowledgeable tour guide who explains the traditions, local economy and heritage of the coastal area.

A day trip into the Ria Formosa takes about 5.5 hours, starting from either Faro or Olhão by boat. The company also offers 2.5 hour boat trips into this protected coastal lagoon, exploring the islets, beaches and natural channels, before stopping off briefly at Culatra Island.

Running similar excursions, but with a slightly different angle, are Ilha Deserta, also based in Faro. Their boat tours take visitors to the deserted islands along the Rio Formosa and allow visitors to have their very own "Robinson Crusoe" experience, as they spend a whole day on a deserted  island before being picked up again at dusk.

Landlubbers will prefer to stick to terra firma, although that doesn't mean they have to explore the Algarve in a hot and sticky Economy rental car from Faro Airport.

The Rotada Cortica company runs thrilling Cork tours, which can be tailor-made to suit families and groups. If your tastes run to extreme sports, the company can incorporate thrills and adrenalin-fuelled activities into the Cork tour you have chosen. Senior citizens and families with small children looking for a gentle stroll through almond orchards and shady Cork Oak groves will get exactly that.

The tours aim to educate and entertain at the same time. Participants learn about the Algarve's cork history while enjoying the beautiful views of the countryside. The company is based and starts its tours at São Brás De Alportel. Depending on the cork route you choose, prices start at 26.00 per person.
