A Walk along Praia do Túnel

A Walk along Praia do Túnel

If you happen to be touring Portugal's beautiful Algarve region with car rental from Faro Airport, be sure to stretch your legs for a while at Praia do Túnel, a stretch of fine golden sands framed by dramatic cliffs that overlook the Atlantic south coast of the Algarve. Situated at the edge of the town of Albufeira and often referred to as Praia do Peneco by locals, this lovely strip of sand is situated at the western end of the town, approximately 29 km from Faro.

The name of the beach refers to the 20 metre long tunnel that leads from the tourist office in the centre of Albufeira to the beach. The tunnel forms a man-made gorge through the cliffs and runs from the main town square to Praia do Túnel. To the west of this beach visitors will find the Xorino Grotto attraction, a cave situated at the very end of the town's promenade. According to local folklore that dates back to the 13th century, the Moors found shelter at Xorino Grotto, when the Christians began to drive them out of Albufeira.

There is no need to delve into the tunnel though: a lift, steps and ramps also lead down to Praia do Túnel, which is littered with sun loungers and parasols in summer, when lifeguards patrol the beach. However, in spring this beach is a good place to come for a walk after a rich tapas lunch or a full English breakfast at one of the British-run places in town.

In the morning the beach is mostly deserted. Gentle waves lap the shore's golden sands and a warm pre-Easter breeze blows the winter blues away. It's a pleasant stroll along the beach or the promenade and affords lovely views of Albufeira. Along the way are a number of pleasant bars, cafes and restaurants, where visitors can take refreshments before handing back their car rental at Faro Airport.
